Wonders of early modern architecture in Budapest: 100 years of “Bauhaus”

The Bauhaus style was founded in 1919 by the architect Walter Gropius in Weimar. Original title: "Staatliche Bauhaus" or "House of State Construction".

Walter Gropius proclaimed the principle of harmonization of arts and crafts and modern technology. "Our goal is to create standard models that meet all economic, technical and formal requirements," he wrote in his program.

As a rule, the functional purpose of a building defines its design, forms, proportions. The facade and sides of the building are of the same type. It does not use traditional protrusions, decorations, it is characterized by clear geometric shapes, flat surfaces and a flat roof.

The buildings have large windows, terraces, spacious inside stairs and lower ceiling heights. Unlike the old ones, the apartments are designed with smaller areas, but with a more practical layout, with many rooms, and a central hall - a hallway. Studio apartments are also built in accordance with all needs.

In Hungary in 1920-1940, for more affluent members of the upper and middle class, residential buildings were built in precisely this most fashionable and beautiful architectural style of that time. In the 1920s, there was also a growing demand for modern family homes. Thus, Napraforgo Street appeared in one of the most sought-after parts of Buda Pasaret. It was built up in 1931 and consists of 22 one-storey family houses (16 separate and 3 duplex houses).
